Emergency Medicine Fellowships
At SUNY Upstate, we offer many fellowships for emergency medicine residents to pursue after their three years of training. We believe that having these fellowship programs here for residents benefits them greatly throughout their clinical training, as they provide educators and faculty dedicated to the latest research, guidelines, and practices specific to each sub-specialty in emergency medicine.

EMS and Disaster Medicine
The EMS and Disaster Medicine Fellowship is a 1-year program that offers a wide range of clinical, research, and administrative opportunities and includes both ground and air medical transport training with a variety of agencies. As a member of the Physician Response Team (run in conjunction with the New York State University Police), fellows have the opportunity to interact with multiple Fire and EMS agencies during MCIs and other challenging calls. Our tactical experience includes ongoing training with the Syracuse Police Department SWAT Team and operational missions 2-3 times per month. Fellows will also provide medical and operational support at special events and mass gatherings, including the Great New York State Fair, Ironman Syracuse, Syracuse University Carrier Dome, Empire State Marathon, and many other athletic events and concerts.
Emergency Ultrasound
The Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship aims to provide our fellows with skills to become excellent sonographers and the experience to incorporate ultrasound into routine Emergency Medicine practice. The program is 1 year in length and provides ultrasound experience in our Emergency Department at Community Campus and the Adult and Pediatric Emergency Departments at the Downtown Campus. We use Zonare One Pro and Mindray ultrasound systems, which transfer images to a web-based archival system (Q-path). Weekly QA sessions and bedside learning provide significant opportunities to hone your ultrasound skills.

Medical Toxicology
The Medical Toxicology Fellowship provides physicians with training in all aspects of the clinical practice of medical toxicology, including management of the critically ill poisoned patient, occupational and environmental exposures, and poison center management. The program is 2 years in length, and fellows will participate in regularly scheduled bedside rounds on hospitalized toxicology patients at Upstate University Hospital and Golisano Children's Hospital. Fellows also participate in many activities at the Upstate New York Poison Center, which provides service and consultation to all parts of New York north of Westchester and Orange Counties.
Michael Keenan, MD
Assistant Fellowship Director
Pediatric Emergency Medicine
The Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) Fellowship aims to train national leaders in the PEM subspecialty. The program is 2-3 years, with fellows having received primary training in either Emergency Medicine or Pediatrics. Based at the Pediatric Emergency Department of Golisano Children's Hospital at University Hospital, the department was founded over 20 years ago, with the program currently. We have a long history of clinical and academic leadership in pediatric care in the central New York region, acting as an essential tertiary referral center for the region and as the only Level I Trauma Center and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in a 15-county region, thus guaranteeing exposure to a variety of acuity and pathology.
